What Is A Groundwater Well Pump?

A: It’s a device that is used to extract water from water-bearing sand strata in the ground.  This can be a small residential jet pump or a small residential submersible pump that goes inside of a casing. It can also be up to a large vertical or submersible turbine that’s used for municipalities and small cities.

What Is The Importance Of A Groundwater Well Pump?

Wells are very important to people from all walks of life in any society. In some places, wells are a dependable and practical solution for water supply.  Whether it’s a farmhouse near Galveston Bay or a chemical plant in Pasadena groundwater wells are a necessary infrastructure.  They are used for potable water supply, irrigation of crops, and industrial applications where surface water is in short supply.  A large segment of the US population could not survive without these wells.  

For those wells to get the water from the water table to the surface to be used, you need a groundwater well pump.  Without something to extract the water from the well, the wells are rendered useless holes in the ground.  In pre-industrial times, some wells used a weighted bucket on a pulley and rope to pull up water.  As you can imagine, these are very impractical but in some underdeveloped regions are still used.

Groundwater pumps use power and mechanics to automate the water extraction process and into distribution. This makes for a stable and usable continuous water supply without laborious hand pumping or the tedious bucket method.

What Types of Pumps Are There?

The pump is the heart of any well system no matter what kind of well it is. There are several types of pumps but the two most widely used are jet and submersible pumps.  Both of these types of groundwater well pumps use centrifugal force to drive the water upward from the aquifer.

Whether you use a jet pump or submersible depends on the depth of the well and the amount of water needed for your application.  

Jet Pumps

Jet pumps are an above-ground pump that uses vacuum power to suck water from the ground through a pipe. An impeller drives the water through a tiny nozzle to create the vacuum effect because jet pumps use water to pump water.  It is for this reason that jet pumps must be primed first with flowing water. 

In terms of depth, jet pumps can be used for wells that are depths of anywhere from 25 feet to about 150 feet. Anything deeper than that and you move into the wheelhouse of what are known as submersible pumps.

Submersible Pumps 

Submersible pumps have a greater range when it comes to depth.  They can be used in wells with depths of anywhere from 25 to 400 feet.  They are called submersible pumps simply because they are submerged deep down in the well just below the water level. Its major focus of energy is thrusting water upward instead of sucking water like a jet pump.

Submersible pumps consist of a cylinder that houses the motor, and several impellers push the water upward into the drop pipe.  Most modern well systems use submersible pumps over jet pumps.  This is because submersible pumps offer greater efficiency, versatility, and they are more durable than any other kind of pump.
